1992 Dodge Turbo Diesel

In 1992 I/we retired and after exploring OR  decided to move to Brookings OR.

We purchased a dodge pickup along with a 39 ft. fifth wheel trailer since we planned on traveling too. We first moved to a small place called Whaleshead, next to Brookings.  We had a box trailer that we moved with one load at a time. It was on one of these trips that we lost our cat  "Shadrack" ! He was riding with me in the pickup Ginny was in the Buick and when she stopped in the middle of the Redwoods in Northern CA to converse with each  other I pulled out in front of her;  I went down the freeway about a mile and could not see Ginny behind me so I stopped to wait for her but she never came. So now I did not know what to do, if I went on to a place to turn around she might come after I turned around and I would miss her. So after waiting for about one half hour I got out of the truck went across the freeway and hailed a ride back to where I left her.  When I arrived Ginny was in panic mode;  She said that when I left with the pickup there sat Shadrack who had jumped out right where the pickup was. She went back to get him and when she was almost there a big rig came by making a lot of noise scaring Shadrack and he ran into the Redwoods, she called and looked for him to no avail.  We went again into the woods to look and call but no Shadrack. We knew that there was a road that went around the area where Shadrack was so we planned for Ginny  to take the car and go around and I would walk through the woods and meet her on the other side.

I started out searching and calling because Shadrack would usually come when called; he was an unusual cat he would ride in his 12 inch high by 13 inch diameter condo where he could see out the window and people could see him. When he wanted to come forward he would growl as he jumped onto the mound on the floorboard. When in Auburn we had a dart board that hung on a door in the game room. We would find Shadrack carrying one of the darts in his mouth usually running and growling with it in his mouth. There was a stool behind this door, he would jump up onto the stool and when someone would open the door he would grab a dart with his mouth from the dart board on the door and then jump down and run through the house. Some time after that he would sit on the floor in front of the dart board and when someone would throw a dart he would jump up and grab a dart and then run.  I went through the woods climbing over downed giant redwoods still calling and searching until I came to the road where Ginny was waiting.  We then walked along the road and met three men with a dog. In telling them of our woe they volunteered to help us look for Shadrack. They said that their dog liked cats and he could help. So we all hunted and hunted.

It was getting late and we thought we might have to get a motel in the next town and continue the search the next day.  Ginny said that she wanted to go back to where Shad was lost and start over and I would stay with the guys and the dog, she took the car and left.  After about fifteen minutes we heard a horn honk with the old familiar honk that we all know and it continued. The guys and I knew that it had to be Ginny so we walked to where their car was and they drove me to where Ginny was; she had found Shad when she was calling and he answered her, he was in between three trees growing close together making like a nest for him.

Shadrack lived to about 14 yrs old and then died of cancer about four yrs ago.We miss him so much but then along came Pepper which helped with the missing.

We traveled all over with the dodge/fifth wheel across the country several times, had a great life.
We took hikes on the beach and hunted special aggots and treasures. Shadrack would hike on the beach with us but always away from the incoming waves as far as his leash would allow. He finally got smart and would just lay down and when we would pull  on his leash he would not get up. we could not drag him so we just did not walk him on the beach

When we were at a County Fair we saw a very cute lop eared rabbit and thought that it might be a companion for Shadrack so we bought him and took him home. We potty trained the rabbit and he had his own litter box   but sometimes he would go in  Shadracks litter box which Shadrack did not like and he would let him know he didn't.

The rabbit would lay on my lap quite a bit, Shad did not like it because that was his place, he would go down to the end of the hall and just sit there.  This caused quite a stir. The Rabbit liked to chew on things like wooden table legs and he would chew holes in my T shirts. Someone told us that we should get some apple wood for the rabbit to chew on. We looked all over and finally found some but it didn't help we reluctantly decided to give him to a pet shop.
